Shanna teaches Veterinary Nursing after a career working in an animal shelter, in private practice and at Wellington Zoo.
“I’ve recently come from the zoo where we cared for a huge range of animals including giraffes, big cats, primates and native New Zealand birds. I learnt so much from the veterinary and zoo keeper teams there and from veterinary specialists who came in for procedures,” says Shanna.
Shanna teaches the Level 6 New Zealand Diploma in Veterinary Nursing and the Level 5 New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Veterinary Nursing Assistant). She had previously worked as a part-time tutor at WelTec.
“I love helping students achieve their goals. It’s great to see students I taught a couple of years ago who are now in practice. We see them at their vet clinics when we’re doing work experience with students,” she says.
One of her current students has had the opportunity to volunteer at the vet hospital at Wellington Zoo. “I taught her two years ago when she was studying Animal Care and she has now progressed through to Veterinary Nursing.”
Shanna herself has a certificate and diploma in veterinary nursing from Otago Polytechnic and later, while working, returned to study and completed a Master’s in Ecology at Victoria University of Wellington.
“I really enjoy being able to research topics in depth so I can share the most current information with students,” says Shanna.
“I also try to give students a real-world view of how nursing is going to be. I’ve worked in several clinics in Wellington and understand how a clinic runs. It’s not just about animals; a huge component is dealing with people. Plus you’ve got to be prepared to do hard work and get grubby.”
