This programme provides practising career counsellors requiring an accredited programme in the area of career counselling theory and practice with the knowledge and skills to establish further credibility within
the field. 

The programme is designed for people who have a minimum of two years field experience.

As a graduate, you will have the skills and knowledge to:

  • Integrate career theory within your own practice
  • Incorporate vocational assessment with career planning
  • Integrate career approaches with the needs and requirements of special populations
  • Gather and present occupational information from workplace sources
  • Prepare and implement research projects for career practice purposes
  • Use presentation skills to facilitate group learning
  • Develop a consulting framework and identify factors which may influence career pathways within organisations
  • Demonstrate the skills of a reflective practitioner

Programme structure

BC5107 Career Development Theory & Practice I (20 Credits)
Aim: To provide a critical understanding of career development theory, vocational assessment instruments, and occupational information resources within an integrated counselling approach.

BC6207 Career Development Theory & Practice II (20 Credits)
Aim: To build on BC 5107 to provide further critical understanding of career theory and practice and to integrate this understanding with client centred counselling skills and other counselling modalities with regard to contextual issues of a client.

BC7321 Professional Development (Careers) (20 Credits)
AIM: To develop and enhance professional skills for working with
individuals and groups in the Careers field

Entry requirements
42 credits at NCEA level 3, including a minimum of 14 credits at level 3 in each of three subjects, or an equivalent qualification, or evidence the ability to achieve within the programme.

For applicants who have English as a second language, a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is required.
