Designed for vocational tutors, lecturers and workplace trainers, the National Certificate in Adult Literacy Education will enable you to discover the most trying aspects of your lessons for students struggling with literacy/numeracy and put in place strategies to provide support and development.
A largely self-directed course of study with integrated ‘on the job’ learning, this certificate provides an opportunity to develop professionally, enhance your teaching style and better equip your students to succeed.

Programme content
- The historical and theoretical context of adult literacy/numeracy within Aotearoa New Zealand
- Māori adult literacy
- Identifying areas where literacy and numeracy are required within your training or educational programme
- Identifying and assessing the literacy and/or numeracy needs, strengths and weaknesses of the individual learner
- Integrating literacy/numeracy skills development into the delivery of your programme and use of appropriate teaching strategies
- Evaluating the effectiveness of literacy/numeracy teaching strategies, learning activities and any specialist literacy/numeracy support within your programme
Programme delivery
The majority of learning within the programme is self-directed, occurring as a result of the implementation, observation and feedback on literacy/numeracy development strategies put into practise within your classroom situation. Tutors will provide the foundation for learning with set reading materials, tutor support, supervision and four 2-day workshops.

Entry requirements
- Evidence of achievement in a programme of study at Level 4 or equivalent
- Recognition as an adult educator currently teaching a programme of study
*If English is not your first language you need to have achieved 6.5 or higher (in all skills) of IELTS or a similar English Language qualification.
