Interested in a career working with New Zealand's youth? Want to make sure you have the skills and knowledge employers need most? Get the right start with WelTec’s new, cutting-edge Bachelor of Youth Development.
Developed in close collaboration with industry, and committed to a Treaty partnership approach the Bachelor of Youth Development has been designed to develop confident and capable practitioners for modern youth services.
Programme Content
Your studies will encourage you to reflect on the issues and influences that impact young people in Aotearoa New Zealand. You will learn about the social and psychological development of youth, and how to apply the latest positive development and strengths-based approaches to your practice with individuals, groups and communities. By the end of the programme you will have a strong sense of your own professional identity with an awareness of ethical standards, cultural safety and a Treaty partnership approach to work with young people.
Programme Delivery
The programme is designed around rich, practice-based learning experiences with considerable use of group work, case studies, multimedia and experiential learning. Classroom teaching will occur during short block periods with online learning - active, task-based group work under the guidance and support of a tutor - between the block sessions. Learning opportunities will include visits of observation to youth development organisations working in specialist practice areas and there will be one supervised and assessed practicum each year.
Career Options
Graduates will be well prepared for professional youth development practice and leadership roles within governmental, non-governmental, community and faith-based agencies including: youth counselling services, iwi and Pacific community development, youth health, school-based services, and specialist services such as drug use, mental health and sexual health services.
