INTERIOR DESIGN - BCT MAJOR

Interiors cannot be designed in isolation. Learn what elements interior designers need to take into account during the creation of their designs - factors such as aesthetics (colour, textiles, and industrial design), the interaction of light and space, construction elements and council regulations.

Read below to find out about the courses you can take as part of the Interior Design major.  To build your degree you can choose 3 major courses from year one, 3 major courses from year two and 1 major course from year three (pre-requisite dependent).

As part of your degree you will also complete compulsory papers which incorporate your specialist interest, and one elective paper each year of the degree.

YEAR ONE
CT5007  Exhibition Design and Detailing
Explores the experiential qualities of space and the details that form it, and the importance of these in understanding the creation of exhibition spaces and exhibiting artifacts.

CT5008  Interior Design Projects 1
Introduces you to the skills processes and principles required in the design development of space. Begin to explore the experiential qualities of space and the details that form it.

CT5009  Interior Environment 1
Introduces you to the principles of building construction and the range of services and environmental issues that affect the interior environment.

CT5010  3D Digital Interiors
Introduction to the use of computer representation and design generation techniques toward the production of interior spaces. Learn about diverse possibilities of CAD: design documentation, lighting and 'fly-through' studies, and digital fabrication.

YEAR TWO
CT6009  Interior Projects 2
Take it further. Interior Projects 2 will build on CT5008 Interior Projects 1 to extend your conceptual, practical and communicative design. Pre-requisite: CT5008
CT6010  Interior Projects 3
Take Interior Projects 3 to further develop and extend the conceptual, practical and communicative design knowledge explored in CT6009 Interior Design Projects 2. Learn how to gain greater control over the resolution of your design projects by developing your understanding of construction, internal detailing, academic theory, practical application of technology and project management skills.   Pre-requisite: CT6009
CT6011  Interior Environment 2
Develop your ability to establish and evaluate building performance and construction criteria as well as your overall understanding of the construction process.  Consider examples of commercial projects and investigate a variety of technical issues such as the building codes and the tendering process. Focus on the importance of lighting within an interior and learn about lighting issues, lamp types and products as well as the various characteristics and appropriate terminology. Then put your knowledge into practise and develop a lighting proposal for your interior concepts. Pre-requisite: CT6005

YEAR THREE
CT7008  Construction Professional Studies
This course will take you beyond the theory and investigate design as a business, its role and responsibilities in the construction process. You’ll learn the structure of a design practice and associated business functions such as contract administration, costings and the legal rights and obligations relevant to a design business. Gain an overall understanding of the legislation that applies within the building and manufacturing industries.
CT7009  Interior Design Theory
Develop both your critical thinking skills and technical skills in the practise of interior design: enhancing your abilities to communicate ideas in a form appropriate to the field of interior design using text, model and drawings. Pre-requisite: CT6010
