Fuel your passion for cooking with WelTec’s Certificate in Food Preparation and Culinary Arts (Level 4).  Taught by highly regarded and award winning chefs with a wealth of experience in the industry, this programme combines theory with practical hands-on learning to ensure that you have the skills that employers need. Gain real world experience through industry work placements and working in WelTec’s training kitchen Bistro 107 alongside front of house staff. 

Programme content
Participants will complete all compulsory requirements of the City & Guilds qualification including:

  • Food preparation methods
  • Cost control operations
  • Cookery methods
  • Pastry techniques
  • Kitchen maintenance and design
  • Menu planning
  • Nutrition and dietetics
  • Storage and care of materials
  • Asian and Pacific rim cooking styles
  • Nutrition at work
  • Food art
  • Safe working practices

Participants will also have the opportunity to gain the following unit standards
towards a National Qualification in Cookery:

  • Manage first aid
  • Provide basic first aid
  • Practice food safety methods in food business  

Entry requirements
8 credits literacy and 8 numeracy credits in NCEA level 1 or equivalent, or demonstration of basic numeracy and literacy skills. 

If you are 20 years of age or older at the start of your studies you are able to apply under special admission criteria.

Students for whom English is a second language, a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent is required. 

Where will it take me?
Opportunities exist for graduates to find work as a Chef in hotel and restaurant kitchens, catering companies and cafés. You may also progress into the Certificate in Patisserie (Level 4) or the second year of the Diploma in Hospitality Operations Supervision (Level 5).
