The aim of the Graduate Diploma in Addiction Studies is to provide an opportunity for you to broaden your knowledge and skill base in relation to the management of clients with complex addictive disorders. In addition you can select courses to meet criteria specified in the Practitioner Competencies for Alcohol and Drug workers in New Zealand.
As a graduate, you will have the skills and knowledge to:
- Integrate theories of use, misuse and addiction into practice
- Apply evidence based intervention models for addiction and co-existing mental health disorders
- Demonstrate competence in assessment and treatment of clients with complex mental health and addiction problems
- Analyse and evaluate the unique issues presented by different cultural groups
- Critically evaluate the philosophies and practice frameworks of prevention and health promotion
- Demonstrate competencies that align with those required for DAPAANZ registration

Entry requirements
Students enrolling in the Graduate Diploma of Addiction Studies will be required to demonstrate appropriate clinical practice experience in the addictions or other relevant fields and have attained a degree or have equivalent practical, professional or educational experience in a relevant field. This may include other Level 6 or Level 7 qualifications.
All applicants will be invited to attend an interview. The interview will provide the opportunity for you to demonstrate appropriate life experience and your likelihood of success on the programme.
Due to the nature of the programme students will also be required to undergo a police check.
For applicants who have English as a second language a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is required.
Special Entry
Special entry may be granted by the Executive Dean responsible for the programme to an applicant who does not meet all entry criteria, where the Executive Dean is satisfied the applicant is capable of undertaking the course of study.
