WelTec and Skylight have responded to industry demand for a nationally recognised qualification that introduces trauma studies.  Skylight's reputation in the field of trauma education and its extensive community networks complement WelTec's experience in programme delivery. This combination of knowledge and practical experience in the field of change, loss, grief and trauma ensures the relevancy and currency of the programme.

The course is a distance course with an e-learning component. Students do not attend class, but are able to work independently from their home environment. To fully participate in the programme you will need a computer with access to the internet and a relevant level of computer literacy. 

There will be a one day workshop for students to access the tutor with face to face learning in the classroom environment. These workshops will be held once each trimester. Dates will be advised.

Programme outcomes
Successful completion of the diploma will enable students to work safely and professionally across a range of organisations and roles within the field of trauma response.

Graduates will be able to demonstrate:

• An understanding of trauma and its impact
• The role of a trauma response worker
• A comprehensive knowledge of community agencies and service providers who assist people experiencing trauma
• Effective communication with individuals and groups affected by trauma

Programme of study 
The programme consists of FIVE courses:

Trauma and its impact (TS4000)

• The impact of trauma on individuals and groups
• Normal responses to change, loss and grief
• Personal responses to trauma

Responding within the context of a traumatic event (TS4001)

• The role of a worker in the context of a traumatic event
• Ethical and legal issues involved in trauma response
• Working effectively with groups in response to trauma
• Working within cultures
• Referral procedures across a range of organisations
• Self-care and safe practice

Communication skills for working in the field of trauma (TS5000)

• Reflective practice
• Cultural sensitivity
• Micro-counselling

Techniques for working in the field of trauma (TS5001)

• Working safely: Self care
• Traumatic incidents and environments
• Trauma response plans and risk assessments
• Referral processes
• Legal and ethical boundaries

Practicum (TS5002)

• Case management and record keeping
• Trauma interventions
• Supervision
• Vicarious trauma
• Fieldwork case studies 

Entry requirements
A Level 4 qualification or equivalent on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Applicants will be working in either paid or voluntary work with people and groups who are experiencing trauma.

For applicants who have English as a second language, a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent is required.

Personal equipment, texts and materials
You will be given full details of all required programme materials at the start of each course. Some readings and case studies will be provided in the distance learning materials. 

All applicants must have access to a computer with a USB port, CD-ROM drive and Internet access. You will also be required to provide usual items such as stationery and consumables. 

Trauma Studies Workshops
Regional workshops have been developed to support you in your trauma studies and students are strongly recommended and encouraged to attend this workshops.   These workshops will be faciliated by Sklylight Trust in conjunction with WelTec.  For further information on Skylight, please visit their web site at www.skylight.org.nz
