The Diploma in Counselling Applied (Careers) is designed to provide you with an understanding of the application of career counselling in a range of situations. Under clinical supervision you will be able to review your developing skill base in relation to the management of clients with career needs.
This programme meets some, but not all, NZAC criteria specified in the Practitioner Competencies for Counselling Workers in Aotearoa – New Zealand.
At the completion of this diploma, you will be able to:
- Evaluate the different theoretical approaches which underpin effective counselling practice and demonstrate these under clinical supervision
- Assess the appropriateness of different theories of counselling in specific cases
- Demonstrate awareness of social, political, cultural and economic contexts within which they work
- Identify ethical issues specific to counselling in the clinical context
- Demonstrate responsiveness to cultural difference in counselling practice
- Under clinical supervision they will be able to review their developing skill base in relation to the management of clients with career needs
- Demonstrate the skills of a reflective practitioner
- Demonstrate a number of competencies required for NZAC registration

Entry requirements
42 credits at NCEA level 3, including a minimum of 14 credits at level 3 in each of three subjects, or an equivalent qualification, or evidence of the ability to achieve within the programme.
For applicants who have English as a second language, a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is required. All enrolments to the counselling programmes are subject to the approval of the Head of Centre.
Students will normally be mature adults with appropriate life experience in order to have a broad view of client issues.
