The Wellington Trades Academy has been established at WelTec’s Petone campus to deliver trades and technology programmes in partnership with secondary schools. Targeted primarily at senior secondary students, the Academy will better equip students opting for a vocationally focused education. Practical and hands-on, the programmes align secondary schooling with tertiary studies so that students may receive joint qualifications.
Selected students will undertake one year of full-time study where they can complete NCEA Level 2 as well as a qualification in their chosen trade. Completion of a year at the Academy will equip students to seek employment as a trainee or apprentice in their vocation of choice, or move on to higher levels of vocational and applied learning.

Wellington Trades Academy offers:
An Extra Qualification - Students who sign up for Trades Academy could leave with two qualifications after one year. In addition to NCEA Level 2, which they would achieve at school, they have the opportunity to complete a one-year trade qualification which can be built upon for further study, apprenticeships or employment.
No Tuition Costs - There are no fees, the Ministry of Education will take care of those.
Applied Learning - Activity and project based, the programmes will include literacy, numeracy, technology and science subjects as well as the technical trade orientated learning. These core subject areas will be contextualised into the trade training rather than taught as separate subjects. Students will have the opportunity to use equipment and technology relevant to their chosen career and learn their theory and practical skills in an exciting environment which involves classrooms, laboratories, workshops and simulated workplaces. Everything students learn will be directly applicable to the real world. The whole purpose of the Trades Academy is to give students a head-start for their careers.
The Academy is designed for motivated students who already have a clear idea about their career plans and the programmes will allow them to focus on this area.
