Wellington Trades Academy

Do you want to start training for employment while still completing Year 12 or 13 at secondary school?

Then it's as easy as 3-2-1. 3 days at secondary school. 2 days at Wellington Trades Academy. 1 awesome programme that allows you to start learning career skills.

All programmes are fees free and we can provide assistance with transport costs.

Practical hands-on learning

While at the Trades Academy you’ll learn in a practical, hands-on, activity and project-based environment using the latest equipment and technology relevant to your chosen future. You will also develop the foundation skills you need so you can progress to higher learning opportunities or move directly into employment.

We offer a number of part-time options. The programmes operate two days a week. During the rest of the week you will attend your secondary school as per normal.

You will undertake a one year 60 credit programme and have the opportunity to achieve NCEA Level 2, as well as a qualification in one of seven subject areas. You’ll also learn key life skills that will be useful once you find employment or should you wish to continue your studies.

Location of studies is dependent on which option you choose. Most programmes are delivered at either WelTec in Petone or Whitireia in Porirua.

Options available

You can choose any one of these options:

  • Trades Skills (Porirua)
  • Animal Care (Petone)
  • Fitness (Petone)
  • Hospitality (Porirua)
  • Early Childhood Studies (Porirua)
  • Health Care (Porirua)
  • Community Participation (Petone)

Community Participation provides training in working with different groups in our community. This includes aged, youth and people with disabilities. The programme will give you insight into how emergency services operate.

The delivery of part-time programmes is dependent on demand.

To apply

To be eligible to enrol at the Wellington Trades Academy you should have achieved at least 60 credits at NCEA Level 1 including the requirements for NCEA Level 1 literacy and numeracy. However, if you don’t meet this requirement you can apply for special entry.

Once we receive your Application to Enrol form and confidential reference from your school, we will invite you for an interview. You can bring family and whanau or other support people with you.

This interview helps to ensure that you understand the programme, are making the right choice and starts the process of planning for your year here.

There are a fixed number of places available so enrolments that meet the key criteria are accepted in the order that they are received.

Application to Enrol forms are available for download (check link on your left) or for more information please call 0800 935 832.
