Secondary School Students

WelTec is a great place to study. Our practical, hands-on courses and programmes can propel you towards a fantastic future.

Browse the website to discover the course options you can choose from. If you’re not sure what direction you want to go in, take five minutes to complete our fun careers quiz and get a quick insight into what options might suit.

WelTec has several zero fee programmes designed specifically for students who are still at secondary school, or have just left. Entry to these programmes is limited so apply today to secure your spot.

  • Wellington Trades Academy

Trades Academies deliver trades and technology programmes to secondary students based on partnerships between schools, tertiary institutions, industry training organisations and employers. If you are interested in a career in the trades or technology, you can use the Vocational Pathways to plan study options and develop pathways for vocational qualifications that are relevant in the workplace.

In 2015, the Wellington Trades Academy will offer programmes at WelTec’s campus in Petone and at the Whitireia campus in Porirua. Some programmes are full-time; others run part-time over two days a week and students in these programmes spend the other three days at secondary school.

Have a look at our proposed programme for 2015 to see what might suit you.

If you enroll in a Trades Academy programme, you can earn credits for NCEA level 2 and get started on your Vocational Pathway at the same time. Click here for more information about Vocational Pathways.

The Academy is a supportive tertiary learning environment which is specifically designed to provide a bridge from secondary studies. The year’s timetable is based on secondary school terms.

  • STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource)
If you’re still at school you can attend WelTec part-time as part of the STAR programme. You’ll gain an introduction to a trade area and be able to see if it’s really for you.

  • Youth Guarantees
If you’re 16-17 and ready to move beyond school this is a great opportunity to study and gain practical skills. Youth Guarantee is an exciting initiative which offers you the chance to study free for one year in a range of hands-on practical programmes.
