Students step up for WOW
Having to perfect the hair and make-up of up to eighty models for the WOW awards could be hair-raising for even the most seasoned of professionals in the beauty industry. However it’s a challenge that has Wellington Institute of Technology’s first year students queuing up to take part in.
A team of around 50 WelTec hair and makeup artistry students and staff are working behind the scenes in this year’s Brancott Estate WOW Awards Show. WelTec has been providing all makeup and hairdressing services for the show since 2005, says Debra Hawkins, Head of School for Hair, Beauty and Exercise Science. Ms Hawkins says it’s an incredible opportunity for students to apply the skills they are learning to industry at such a top level.
“There are not many opportunities during their learning experience quite as big for them as WOW,” says Debra. “Many are already extremely talented and creative and it’s a chance for them to shine.”
Students Briar Maxwell and Adriana Coetzee are among the group who will be taking part behind the scenes in WOW until October 7. Ms Maxwell has been working backstage live to provide hair services for models.
“It’s an incredible experience, we have to change or fix up their styles as they move between costume categories in a really short time,” says Ms Maxwell.
WOW is providing $1000 scholarships to three students of the school later this year to put towards further study.
