We are working with Nova on a plan to continue operating from there for the remainder of the year.  We will be in a position to confirm this as soon as we have the arrangements agreed and finalised.  We are very grateful and appreciate the support that Joy and the team from Nova continue to provide and that our staff and students embrace.  In the interim, requests for hard copy material for next semester can be sent to library@weltec.ac.nz.

UPDATE - FRIDAY 6 MAY 2011

WelTec Christchurch campus has now been up and running since early April at Nova Lodge in Templeton. Below are the bus timetable options.  We will continue to review the situation and provide updated information to students as soon as it comes to hand.  We are very pleased at how smoothly the transition has gone and grateful to Joy and the team at Nova for their continued support.

Nova Lodge Bus Information
The "selwynstar" 88 Rolleston bus runs via Templeton & is the closest bus route to Nova Lodge. The bus is operating on the existing timetable with the only change being that the journey originates on Hagley Avenue beside Christchurch Public Hospital since the Bus Exchange Central is non-operational within the CBD.
N.B. Metroinfo were unable to say exactly where on Hagley Ave the bus would be originating

The bus stops at Kirk Rd & you will then need to make your way (approx1.2km) to Nova in Newtons Rd. Ask the driver to drop you as close to Newtons Rd as possible.

UPDATE - FRIDAY 8 APRIL 2011

Around 30 students came to the Orientation Day on Tuesday at our new temporary premises at Nova and we are very pleased to confirm that the first face to face classes for the year commenced on Wednesday.  We are very grateful to the Nova Trust for the flexibility they have shown in enabling us to get up and running on their premises.

Further updates on the WelTec site at Science Alive will be posted here as they come to hand.

UPDATE - SUNDAY 6 MARCH 2011

WelTec Petone/Wellington Staff Visit Christchurch

Julia Hennessy – Executive Dean, Steve Marshall – Head of School and Sue Mills – Academic Manager visited Christchurch staff at one of the staff member’s home on Friday.  They were very pleased to see 17 students who managed to make it to meet with them.  Mostly the students that attended said they would like to see lectures start as soon as possible.  Once the building is cleared for occupancy, which with all positive indications to-date we expect to be very soon, we will work hard to get everything back up and running.  Most students had jobs in Christchurch and so want to stay there.

Some students had not received emails from WelTec and it was explained that texting was the first point of contact as this seemed to be the most reliable communication mechanism at the start.  Also being used is twitter, facebook, and intra and internet website postings.  We will start using email as one of our main methods of communcation and students can email WelTec on StudentAdvisors@WelTec.ac.nz.  We are already responding to those messages.  Some student’s cell phones are no longer working and others have new ones and so new numbers were gathered.

Gaye, the Administrator at Christchurch and other students that attended on Friday said they will help us with trying to get in contact with those that have not been heard from as yet.  Petone Campus staff wlil continue to work on this.  It seems to be mostly first year students that we have not got hold of to-date.  We would like to give a big thank you to students and staff who are continuing to assist with this.

Timetables are being redone and classes scheduled for March will be rescheduled for later in the trimester.  Loans and allowances to date will not be affected as the start date of the programme has not changed.

Students advise they would like hard copies of the readings for the trimester one courses.  We will print copies and sort out the best way to have them distributed to you.

To those of you who have yet to make contact, if you are able we want to hear from you and what your current situation is so that we can work with you all to meet your learning needs as best as possible.  Again, we do expect WelTec Christchurch to be up and running very soon and look forward to seeing you all.

We hope that the weekend is seeing some improvement in your own situations and we want you to know that we will do what we possibly can in our capacity to work with you on an individual basis to meet your specific needs at this time.

UPDATE - WEDNESDAY 2 MARCH 2011

Latest information to hand in relation to the building where WelTec is located in Christchurch is that it has sustained some damage but they don't believe it is irreparable. We are awaiting an engineer's report but in the interim the building has been yellow stickered which means that while superficially it doesn’t look like there is obvious danger until an engineer’s report has been received entry is limited and for the purposes of retrieving files, computers etc.   It seems the tower end is where any issues are and this is away from WelTec’s rooms.  Once an engineer’s report is received we will have a better idea of when the building will be open again for everyday use.  The history of the building is that it was previously the Christchurch Railway Station and is very solidly built.  It is a wooden building with brick around it and is not the same as others that have suffered in the recent earthquakes.

The building owners are allowing occupants supervised entry tomorrow and some of our staff may visit.

We are very pleased that a number of you are able to meet with our staff on Friday.  Some of you are keen to get back to some normality and get back to learning asap while others of you would like to look at alternative options.  We are very happy to discuss with you your individual circumstances and will be doing everything we can to work with you to support your current needs.
